On May 20, was held at the University of Jaén the act of defense of the doctoral thesis “Advance planning of end-of-life decisions: experiences and needs of Primary Care nurses” by Mrs. Nani Granero Moya supervised by Dr. Antonio Frías Osuna and Dr. Antonio Jesús Ramos Morcillo.
The objective of this thesis was to qualitatively address the experiences of Primary Care nurses in planning health decisions in the last stage of the life of the sick people they care for.
The results shown the limited structured conversations around planning, lack of knowledge or communication skills of professionals on this topic, the presence of problems in the health organization that complicate the development of these interventions, the unwillingness of sick people and their dear relatives to talk about decisions about their illness for the future, the attitudes of nurses and their role in the health team.
Therefore, the need for specific training, training in communication skills and emotional management of nurses on health care planning is suggested, as well as a change in society and health organisations to fully integrate this approach to end-of-life care decisions.
