On Septembe<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\"\"r 12th, at the University of Ja\u00e9n took place the PhD viva titled “The first moments in the caring: The process of becoming caregiver of a dependent elderly relative<\/em>” carried out by the PhD student, Mrs Lourdes Moral Fernandez, supervised by Dr. Antonio Fr\u00edas.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>This is a contribution to the research topic <\/span>Family and informal care and caregivers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n


\n<\/span>The aim of this thesis is to explore the initial experiences of people who suddenly become caregivers of dependent erderly relatives and try to describe the process which they pass. <\/span>So, an original research was carried out in Ja\u00e9n, through in-depth interviews, and a qualitative meta-synthesis of 16 international studies. <\/span>The findings showed that the process of becoming a family caregiver develops in three phases: assuming the role of caregiver, starting to realize and implementing strategies.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span>The description of this process improves the understanding of the experience of becoming a family caregiver, both for the health professional and for family caregivers.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
