Last week, two researchers from our research group went to the Catholic University of Murcia, where the educational materials created in the NurSus project are being used. Specifically, in the Maternal and Infant Nursing course, a seminar was held on Children’s Environmental Health using blended-learning. And in the Community Nursing course, a unit referring to Environmental Sustainability and Nursing and three theoretical-practical seminars with study cases on contamination and social determinants of health have been included.
In Murcia, there is the only Spanish Paediatric Environmental Health Unit, which has a nurse who assesses one third of the pregnant women in Murcia, and those derived by midwives due to risk factors detected. This unit is able to prevent and detect early childhood illnesses caused by the environment at school, at home and in the area of residence.
We hope that the dissemination of NurSus materials will become more visible through the Spanish and European university world. Since various nursing organizations are taking seat on this new health challenge, where Nursing has a large field of action, because apart from the large production of avoidable waste they produce, have the power to prevent environmental risks through proper screening.
