PhD dissertation on Pressure injuries prevention

The purple hall of the University of Jaén hosted on February 7, 2020, the dissertation of the doctoral thesis “Prevention of pressure injuries: knowledge, attitudes and barriers of nursing professionals” by PhD student Mª Dolores López Franco, member of this research group. The thesis was supervised by Professor Pedro L. Pancorbo Hidalgo, within the line of research on wounds. The examinators panel was formed by Dr. Javier Soldevilla (Director of the GNEAUPP), Dr. Alba Roca (from the Rovira i Virgili University) and Dr. Francisco P. García (from the University of Jaén).

This thesis is linked to the SECOACBA research project developed since 2016 by this group, which is starting to produce interesting results. In this research, three new instruments have been developed that are useful for evaluating several aspects related to the prevention of pressure injuries;

  • a questionnaire to measure knowledge about prevention;
  • a questionnaire to identify barriers to prevention as perceived by nurses,
  • a Spanish version of the Attitudes towards Prevention questionnaire (APuP developed by Beeckman).

  Also studied was the effect of the perception of LPP as adverse effects of health care and the culture of patient safety on the prevention of these injuries.

This thesis has permitted to establish which are the complex relationships between knowledge, attitudes and barriers towards prevention, and how they influence mutually. These relationships allow us to propose a new theoretical model that may be validated in future studies.
